Football is most definitely not my thing. My family are all proud Swans fans and still tease me over the time we hired a box at the stadium for my Dad’s 70th birthday and I declared that I was “reading the magazine in the interval.” Apparently I was supposed to say “reading the programme at half time!” Me and The Husband are a match (see what I done there) made in heaven as football is definitely not his thing either! (Phew!)
However I do understand the pride, love, passion and sense of belonging that football brings to so many and so, when I was asked by a lifelong Liverpool fan to make a Memory Cushion out of his Scouser Dad’s football shirt, I knew the huge importance of this sewing task and the trust the family had placed in me.
You know I may not be a fan of football but I absolutely love how this very special Memory Cushion, instead of being tucked away in a drawer somewhere, can now sit quietly amongst the family. This Memory Cushion is a poignant symbol of their much loved and missed father and a sweet reminder that “You’ll never walk alone!”
For me, the most difficult part of sewing is when I have the scissors in my hand and the pristine fabric in front of me. I guess it’s like looking at a blank sheet of paper for a writer. However, once that scissors slides into the fabric and my creativity kicks in, all feels good and away I go. When the fabric is a special piece of clothing then that first cut is even tougher. I was recently commissioned to create a unique and wonderful memory cushion from a shirt worn to the Golden Wedding celebrations of a beautiful couple. The shirt means a lot to his wife and knowing that she trusted me with this task means a lot to me. John loved his wife, life and music, and I really think this gorgeous memory cushion captures it all. ❤️
Sometime I am entrusted with important sewing tasks … such as taking the hem up on an exquisite wedding dress, or altering the waist on a beautiful prom dress. I understand that handing over any item of clothing to a dress-maker for alteration requires trust and confidence, even more so when the clothing has special memories attached and belonged to someone who is greatly loved and missed.
This week I was entrusted with the cardigan of a husband, father and grandfather and his memories have been loved and treasured by his family for many years. His much loved cardigan was often worn by him and features in photographs with not only his own children but also his grandchildren. His cardigan has been so very precious to the family and of course represents happy memories, sweet sentiment, big smiles and huge love.
After a visit to The ThreadShed the cardigan has been transformed into ‘Dado’s Pillow’ and instead of being tucked away in a drawer can be kept on the sofa to bring cuddles and comfort to his family at all times.
Many thanks to his daughter Hannah for her trust in me and for understanding what a precious birthday gift it would be for her Mam. I really hope that Dado is smiling down on his family and enjoying the transformation of the cardigan that he adored so much ❤️
